Ammoudara

Ammoudara is a very large beach that starts in front of the Pankritio Stadium at the mouth of the Giofyro River, 1 km west of the center of Heraklion, and reaches the mouth of the Almyros River in the area of Ellinoperama, 7 km west. The main settlement of Ammoudara is located in a fertile plain with olive groves and belongs to the region of Gazi, the seat of the municipality of Malevizi, which is built on a low hill at a distance of about 2 km from the sea.

The beach of Ammoudara, as its name suggests, is a sandy beach with fine brown sand. Along the coast almost along its entire length and at a distance of about 50m from the beach there is a rock that in ancient times was the limit of the beach. The beach is so big that there are options for everyone, from those who want a lot of people to those who do not want at all. The area of the Pankritio Stadium and the adjacent swamp of Xiropotamos with its sand dunes is one of the places where one can be completely isolated. Further west, where the many hotels of Ammoudara start, we find organized beaches with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, lifeguards, showers, locker rooms, water sports, etc. Among the organized areas are the protected estuary of Po as well as the industrial zone of Ellinoperamata.
